Who do you think is most responsible for controlling your diabetes?

The person most responsible for controlling your diabetes is you. Your doctor, nurse, and diabetes educator can help you learn the necessary skills but most of the responsibility is yours. The food you eat, the exercise you do, the way you deal with stress, taking your medication—these are all factors that can influence blood glucose levels. Learning your body and how these factors will affect you is very important. The best way to understand how all these things affect blood sugar levels is to check your blood sugar often. Checking your blood sugar is the only way to know your blood sugar levels. You cannot usually “feel” high blood sugar. The only way to know if diet, exercise and medication are working is to check your blood sugar regularly. When you notice your blood sugar is high, try to figure out what caused it to rise. Keeping a log of your blood sugars along with the foods you eat, exercise, and stress levels can help you understand why your blood sugar is elevated.
