Checking your blood sugar is very important. This is the
only way to know your blood sugar level. The more often
you can check your blood sugar, the more information you
can get. Talk with your doctor to see how often she/he
would like you to be checking your blood sugar. Also,
ask your doctor what numbers you should be striving for
when you check your blood sugar.
The following are the American Association of Clinical
Endocrinologists recommendations:
Fasting (before meals): 70-110 mg/dL
1-2 hours after meals: less than 140 mg/dL
These numbers represent “normal” blood sugar levels (the
levels of people without diabetes). Keeping your blood
sugar levels in this range can help prevent or delay
many diabetes complications.
If you do not have a monitor to check your blood sugar,
please contact April Popejoy to help you get one.
